The ESS students had an enriching and memorable learning experience at The Big Barn Farm, where classroom concepts were brought to life through hands-on exploration. The day began with ice-breaking and team-bonding activities that strengthened collaboration and communication among students.
Working with worm-rich soil helped students understand the vital role of decomposers in maintaining soil fertility, particularly how earthworms enhance aeration and nutrient cycling to support sustainable agriculture. Interacting with goats, cows, iguanas, and guinea pigs provided insight into the interdependence within farming systems, including animal care, dietary needs, and their contributions such as milk and manure.
Beyond academics, the visit nurtured empathy and environmental responsibility. One student’s reflection mentioned that caring for and observing the animals encouraged compassion and reinforced the importance of ethical stewardship in sustaining ecosystems.
Overall, the trip successfully connected ESS theory to real-world practice while fostering teamwork, awareness, and respect for living systems.
