National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
he National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level.
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is one of the two National Boards of School Education. The courses at NIOS have the same standard and equivalence as the courses of study of other national/state level Boards of School Education. The quality and rigour of assessment process of the NIOS examinations is identical, if not more difficult, compared to other Boards. NIOS has implemented various strategies to support learners in their pursuit of successful learning.

Reasons to choose NIOS
The NIOS follows the principle of freedom to learn i.e., what to learn, when to learn, how to learn and when to appear for the examination are decided by the Learner. There is no restriction of time, place and pace of learning.
The NIOS provides flexibility with respect to :
- Choice of Subjects: The learner has the option to choose subjects of his/her choice from the given list keeping in view the passing criteria.
- Admission: The learner has the option to take admission Online under various streams or through Study Centre, Facilitation Centre, Regional Centre for the Secondary and the Senior Secondary Education Courses.
- Examination: The Public Examinations are held twice in a year. Nine examination chances are offered to the learner in five years. A learner can appear in examination during this period as and when he/she is well prepared and can avail the facility of credit accumulation.
Why choose NIOS at candor?
There is a dedicated team of well experienced teachers who work closely with each child to curate a personalized learning environment through the most critical public examinations – Secondary level (equivalent to Grade 10) and Senior Secondary Level examinations (equivalent to Grade 12).
This is done keeping in mind the learning needs of each child allowing them to choose learning at their own pace.
Who can enroll for the NIOS program at NIOS?
- Those students who find the Cambridge and IB curriculum overwhelming and not seeing much progress academically do well when allowed to learn at the subjects of their choice and at their own pace.
- Those students who would like to pursue sports/theatre/music/dance at state level and may need to spend a large amount of time outside school to gain professional training in the above mentioned areas.
- Those students who for various medical reasons, cannot attend school regularly, and miss out on adequate learning opportunities since those curricula are not suitable to cater to prioritising their health needs.
- Those students who may face academic and learning challenges and the international curricula does not allow for flexibility to accommodate their current learning challenges.
Subject choices and assessments
Students need to take five subjects and English is a compulsory subject for both Secondary and Senior Secondary Level.
Secondary Level Examination is equivalent to Grade 10.
Senior Secondary Level Examination is equivalent to Grade 12.
The student needs to pass in five subjects and the pass percentage is 33%.
The Examinations are conducted twice a year. Once in October/November and the other April/May.
