The International Baccalaureate Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end, the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Early Years Programme & Primary Years Programme

Early Years (PreK, EY1, EY2)
Admission to the Early Years is based on an informal interaction and observation. No formal written assessment is conducted at this stage.
The interaction and observation focuses on:
● Simple verbal communication and conversation
● Recognition of letters, sounds, numbers, and basic concepts appropriate to the child’s age
● Fine motor skills, social interaction, and the ability to follow simple instructions
PYP 1 (Grade 1)
Admission into Grade 1 includes the following assessments:
● A grade-appropriate assessment in English and Mathematics
● A verbal interaction to assess communication skills, confidence, and comprehension
● In class observation for at least half a day.
PYP (Grades 2–5)
Students applying for PYP Grades 2–5 are required to complete:
● Online screening tests for Reading, English language, Math and Science.

Cambridge Lower Secondary and IGCSE (Grades 6-10)

Students seeking admission for Grades 6 to 10 are required to complete:
● Online screening tests for Reading, English language, Math and Science.
The school offers guidance during the interaction to select subjects and include personnel who can provide further personalised support such as additional learning support for students who qualify for the same and/or social emotional counselling.
Students who have a very low level of English proficiency will not be admitted to Grade 9 or above as this limitation means the student will not be able to achieve success in the programs and subjects the school offers. For students below Grade 9, admission decisions will be made on how much support the school is able to provide both within and outside of regular scheduled classes.

IB Diploma and Cambridge AS (Grade 11)

Students seeking admission into Grade 11 are required to complete:
● Online screening tests for Reading, English language, Math and Science.
It is an expectation that students who apply to enter the Cambridge AS or IB Diploma Programmes must have secured adequate grades in Grade 10 to show they are prepared for success in Grades 11 and 12. The school has developed IGCSE prerequisites (Appendix 1) for entry into both programmes and all subjects in Grade 11. If students come from other systems, the grades will be examined and further testing may be conducted wherever a clear decision cannot be made.
Requirements:
● Successful completion of Grade 10 – secondary school qualification in an English medium setting.
● Submission of Grade 10 board examination results or school transcripts when received.
● Mock or first semester results may have to be used to make decisions.
● Satisfactory English proficiency to be able to be successful in DP English A Language and Literature or our at least one of the Cambridge English options. Further testing may be required in some cases.

Mid-Year Transfer to IB Diploma Programme (DP1 and DP2)

Academic Requirements
● Submission of any existing DP1 school reports for admission to DP1 in second semester.
● Submission of DP1 school reports for admission to DP2.
● A consistent academic record with minimum grades of 4.
● Alignment of the subjects being studied at the current school with Candor offerings and spaces available.
Placement decisions will be made by the school based on academic readiness and subject availability and the combination of subjects as per the DP subject choice form.

Special Educational Needs and Learning Support

Any diagnosed special education needs must be shared during the admissions process. Educational Psychologist reports and previous Individual Educational Plans are required.
An interaction with the Head of Learning Support will be included in the process for all students who have a diagnosed or suspected special learning need.
A final decision on admission will be based on the student’s ability to access learning and the school’s ability to provide the necessary support in line with IB guidelines.

Inclusion

Candor is an inclusive school and believes in providing equal opportunities to all learners. As such, admission is never denied on the grounds of a student having physical disabilities/challenges or learning disabilities and difficulties, as long as the school is confident that it has the resources and infrastructure to adequately support the child. The school has a dedicated SEN [Special Education Needs] Department to support the learning needs of students with disabilities/learning disorders as well as an in-school Counsellor who can offer emotional support to students who require the same.
In case the school feels that the student requires infrastructure or support that the school lacks, it may refer the student to another school which has the required resources and infrastructure. The school also expects full transparency from parents with regards to the medical/psychological records of the child so it can be determined if the necessary support can be provided. The school reserves the right to cancel any enrollment if found that false information and documentation have been provided or important and necessary information has not been disclosed.

Boarding Applications

Admission for students who wish to stay at the school’s boarding facility is first of all dependent on the availability of a space. If there is an age and gender-appropriate space available, then the full admission process for all students should be followed.
There will also be a parent and student interaction with the Head of Boarding at the interaction phase of the process.

The policy is available on the school’s website for the perusal of interested stakeholders.

[Check Inclusion Policy for further details]

Before a Special Needs student is enrolled, scanned copies of their clinical assessments should be sent to the Admissions Officer. Based on the input from the Head of Department of Special Education Needs and Counsellor [where required], meetings are scheduled with the parents and student to better understand the child’s needs and to determine the school’s ability to provide adequate services to the students. Based on the outcome of the meetings and the documentation provided, the Admissions Committee takes a final decision on the admission of the student.

In case the school feels that the student requires infrastructure or support that the school lacks, it may refer the student to another school which has the required resources and infrastructure. The school also expects full transparency from the parent with regards to the medical/psychological records of the child [where applicable] so that necessary support can be provided. The school reserves the right to cancel any enrolment if found that false information and documentation have been provided.
